06-29 Frederiksborg Castle - Museum of History

Switching up the plan again today. We are heading out to the castle because there's less chance of rain.

We walk down to the train depot and catch the train out to the castle at 9:30 this morning. After the 30 minute train ride, it's a short 1 mile walk over to the Frederiksborg Castle.

Frederiksborg was built in the early 1600's for King Christian IV. This was the first castle not built on the sea and led to major road improvements, for the King had to be able to GET to his castle.

As with most castles though, this one burned down in the mid 1800's and was rebuilt as a Museum of History in 1882.

We start out on a group tour. It is too crowded and too noisy to hear and she is going too fast to enjoy anything, so we back up and pull out our iPhones. Pat downloaded a walking tour through the castle this morning from their website. We continued on our own letting noisy groups pass us.

There seems to be lots of Guided Tour led groups here and they all have headsets on so they can hear, but the tour guide is yelling her commentary out loud. Loud.

This castle has one amazing ceiling after another. There isn't one room that doesn't have a coffered, elaborately trimmed, and painted ceiling. And no two of them match. You think this one is the best and two rooms later you change your mind. So much work put into the ceiling.

Here is the ceiling in the church.

Yes, this is a ceiling.

Most of the rooms were just beautiful.

After touring most of the castle we took a break and had lunch in their cafe. We split a very good burger. Now back to finish the castle.

After a few more rooms and a quick run through an art show we finished and headed out to the town of Hillerod at 3:45 pm.

We shopped along their pedestrian-only area for an hour or so, found a pizza place for dinner and then took the train back to Copenhagen.
