After the 45 minute tour, we spent another 45 minutes reading and seeing the exhibits. This museum is fairly new, opening in 2001 on the 100th anniversary of the Nobel Peace Award.
We learn about Alfred Nobel and how he made his fortune from inventing dynamite in 1864 and then used his fortune to fund the Nobel Peace Prize after his death in 1896. This video explained this nicely.
The award winners not only get this prestigious award they also get a very large sum of money, which is different each year, depending on how much money the original fund made that year. The original amount cannot be touched, only the interest. If two or more win in the same category (you can have up to three winners in a category), they have to split the award for their category. Lately, each category has been awarded around one million dollars.
Each of the previous winners was displayed on a placard on a moving track. There was an area where the track came down to eye-level so you could read the placards.
There are specific organizations designated by Nobel that specializes in picking the winners from people who are nominated by previous winners of that category or people in that category.
For lunch we split some Swedish meatballs, potatoes and lingonberry sauce. It wasn't as good as I've had at IKEA in Seattle. Will have to try again.
The Museum of Medieval Stockholm sounded kind of boring and old, but it turned out to be a fairly nice museum, presenting 1400's - 1600's Stockholm in an interesting way, but still with old stuff in it.
It seems maybe we should build more parking garages in the world, because that's how they found the city wall and all of these artifacts.
They started to dig to build a garage for their parliament and found all of this "stuff". We got to see the wall really close, even touch part of it and then there were maps, models and tabloids showing how they lived in the 1400's and 1500's. Nicely done.
Video monitors showed all the layers of clothing they wore. How DO you put on armor? There were examples of how the houses were build as well.
We headed home after this, because Pat had a appointment to get his hair cut. Karen relaxed in the apartment while Pat got his hair cut, finally.
Went out to dinner at a taco place that was no Taco Time, but it was pretty good.
Grabbed some groceries and came home in a down pour with my rain coat in the apartment.
