06-14 Viking Ship and Norwegian Folk Museums Oslo

Today we had scheduled the three museums, The Kon Tiki, the Fram, and the Maritime Museums. We realized we were supposed to leave at nine to get this all done, so we flipped days and did tomorrow’s schedule today.

We started with the same ferry ride and went to the Viking Ship Museum and then the Norwegian Folk Museum. From the ferry we walked up the hill about a 1/2 mile to The Viking Ship Museum.

It's very impressive when you first walk in and see the big Viking Ship. The details in the carving on the Oseberg ship and the swirls at both ends is amazing. The fact that there is that much detail on something that's been under water. There are two ships here and a part of a ship and other artifacts.

Every 15 minutes they show a movie on the wall at the end of the room and on the side walls and ceiling (it's shaped like the bottom of the hull of a ship). The show had no words, but tells the story of a Viking warrior getting killed in battle and being buried in the ship with all the gifts.

Done here, we head over just a short walk to the Norwegian Folk Museum. We eat lunch at their cafe and then tour all the open buildings here.

This is another outdoor museum which has buildings that don't open till July and August. We peek into buildings from all over Norway. The Telemark area, Trondelag area, and farms from up in the fjord areas we visited on our cruise last month.

Farm building from the Trondelag area.

This was a unique way of building a wall in a store house from a farm in the Hardanger Fjord area. They weaved branches in and out of slats.

Not as many costumed people telling you about the areas like at Skansen, just mostly signs. Nice looking ornamentation on this building.

This was evidence of a well-off farmer in the Telemark region of Norway. He could pay someone to come and paint designs on his furniture and walls.

We walked 2 ½ miles back to the apartment in the sunshine ☀, yes sunshine ☀, stopping at the store for aluminum foil. Picked up strawberries and sugar also to have for dinner with yesterday's school bread on our deck.
