After our pictures on the roof we head into the city. We were going to The National Museum, but it wasn't open for another hour, so we headed to Vigeland/Frogner Park, 1 1/2 miles away, to see the famous Gustav Vigeland sculptures. On the way, we walked past the Royal Palace and some of the nicest houses in the city.
Over 200 sculptures of bronze or granite are in a big park, Frogner Park, with beautiful grounds and fountains. After Vigeland gained some notoriety (and they demolished his home to build a library), the city gave him another place to live on the edge of this park. In exchange, he said he'd put some sculptures in the Park. We spent about 30 minutes taking pictures in the park.
After walking all the way to the tower sculpture, we stopped for lunch at the cafe near the entrance. We grab some sandwiches and cokes and then head back to the National Museum.
Brian wants to see the famous "The Scream" painting by Edvard Munch. It's Thursday, so we get in for free! It's an art museum, but it isn't very big, so we spend about 45 minutes here.
There are a couple of Picasso paintings in here as well. This one is entitled "Guitar". He was only 31 when he painted this one. He was just getting started and probably hadn't found his "style" yet, because you have to look long and hard to see a guitar in this, as I'm obviously doing.
Next we walk through more of old town and over through Studenterlunden Park near the National Theater. One of Karen's relatives? Maybe.
Interesting sculpture and water; it's as if the water is trying to put the granite piece on top of the main sculpture, but the hand is holding it down.
We ended up back at the Akershus Fortress that our ship was docked next to and walked through. Got some nice pictures from the top of the harbor. Beautiful day sunny and warm.
Checked out some food trucks down by the water front. Then we walked along until we found some ice cream and sat on the dock and enjoyed the sunshine.
We walked back to the ship and got one last picture of all three of us and the ship in the background boarding 30 minutes before we leave Oslo.
It's a really beautiful, fun port to cruise out of because there's so many small islands, with houses, boats, and marinas. We are in the narrow passageway (it's called the Oslo Fjord, but it really isn't one) until after we finish dinner. Then it widens up a little. We can still see land and houses, but we are not close anymore.
Dinner tonight is in the Lido Restaurant, the buffet. We wish the taco and burger place out by the pool was open at night for dinner, but it closes at 5 pm.
After dinner and trivia, the show wasn't holding my attention, so I went back to the room and in ten minutes Pat was back too. So he did the laundry.
I got things organized, then went to bed. I was really tired. We didn't get any sleep last night going into Oslo, because it was too light too early, 4:00 am.
